About Us

The Rotary Club of Balasore was first conceived in early 1965 when a few Rotarians led by Rtn Vijay Bhandari from Rotary Club of Kharagpur visited Balasore with a view to start Rotary Club at Balasore. A meeting was held in the Chamber of Dr Bijay Giri who later became the Charter President of the Club. It took over three years the idea to fructify and the Rotary Charter dated 1st May 1968 was presented in special ceremony held on 22nd June 1968 by the Past District Governor RID 325 Rtn Justice Harihar Mohaptra. Rotarians from Rotary Clubs of Berhampore, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kharagpur and South Calcutta were witness to the Charter presentation. The Club was sponsored by Rotary Club of Cuttack and Rtn Khatau Sundar Das was the Governor’s Representative for this club. The role of Major Rammohan Roy (a past member of RID 315) who was then posted at the Proof & Experimental Establishment, Chandipur cannot be forgotten by the members of the Club as he was instrumental in mobilising the first members for the club. The club could get its own building in 1972 by the persistent effort of Charter Member Rtn P.P. Prasanta Kumar Chand and few other devoted Rotarians. The club quickly got recognition with the public of Balasore due to its yeomen service in organising Eye Camps for Cataract Surgery. Charter Member Rtn PP Motilal Didwania was instrumental in organising annual Eye Camps. To perpetuate club’s activity in Eye Care the Rotary Balasore Eye Hospital was established in 2016. The building constructed in 1972 now houses the Club and the Hospital too. The Club’s bulletin “The Ranger” was first published on 5th May 1969 under the Editorship of Rtn A.S.Jamwal. Rotary Club of Balasore celebrated its Golden Jubilee during the Rotary Year 2017-2018.
